Holocaust Education
Applies to- Headteachers, RE Coordinators, Heads of RE and teachers of RE
Halton SACRE would like to share the opportunity to work with a Holocaust Educator, Freddy Naftel, who has recently worked with schools in Cheshire and the Diocese of Shrewsbury. A short biography and a contact email address are provided below. Mr Naftel will be attending a future Halton/Warrington RE Network meeting;
Freddy Naftel's background is in teaching. He taught Music for 25 years in various secondary schools and sixth form colleges, along with some RE sessions. He is a self-employed Holocaust educator from Manchester and for the past five years, has visited over 150 different types of schools within the UK, delivering presentations and workshops of the subject of Judaism, The Legacy of The Holocaust and Anti-Semitism Today.
Freddy relates his own personal family story, how his Mother and Grandparents fled Nazi Germany as refugees from persecution, that his Great-Grandmother survived the camps and how his Great Aunt and Uncle both perished in Auschwitz. Freddy has himself been the victim of prejudice both at school and while working professionally and he talks honestly and directly about how he dealt with this matter and how his views were shaped by these experiences.
Freddy also highlights contemporary issues of anti-semitism, ignorance and intolerance through the use of slideshows and news reports, most of which will not have been reported in the media. The aim is to change student perceptions of myths and stereotypes.
The presentations are suitable for all year groups and can be adapted as necessary, as Freddy can be very flexible in approaching the topic. These sessions are by no means reserved for Holocaust Memorial Day and are valid all year round. Sessions can last from 50/60 minutes to longer if necessary and he can address individual classes or larger groups as required.
