The new Mersey Gateway Bridge opened on 14th October 2017. The Mersey Gateway Bridge and the Silver Jubilee Bridge are both tolled (the Silver Jubilee Bridge is currently closed for repairs and refurbishment and is due to re-open in late 2018). Unlike the Mersey Tunnels, there are no toll booths. Instead, the Mersey Gateway uses advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and other systems to recognise vehicles making a crossing.
Merseyflow will not issue any bills/invoices, instead, the driver can pay for the toll in a number of different ways, including:
· Online at www.merseyflow.co.uk,
· by phone on 01928 878 878,
· at Merseyflow's Walk in centre at Manor Park, Runcorn and;
· at various 'Payzone' outlets across the UK.
For unregistered users, payments can be made in advance of a crossing but tolls must be paid by 11.59 the day after you cross. If you do not pay on time, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of up to £60.
The cost of tolls for unregistered users are::
Class 1 - Motorcycle or local bus - Free
Class 2 - Car or small van - £2
Class 3 - Large Van/Good vehicle/Minibus - £6
Class 4 - HGV - £8
Registering for one of the pre-pay accounts or monthly passes is the cheapest and simplest way to pay to cross the Mersey Gateway Bridge and also save up to 10% on the cost of each journey. You will need to pay a £5 one-off registration fee for each vehicle you register, whether you register for a sticker (driver places a sticker in the vehicle which is recognised by the system) or video (ANPR only) account. If you don't register you will have to pay the full unregistered toll – £2 per one way trip for a Class 2 vehicle – every time you cross the river.
For an annual fee of £10, eligible Halton residents can make as many personal journeys as they like at no extra cost.
Further details on the types of discount accounts can be found at www.merseyflow.co.uk
Treatment / reimbursement of Mersey Gateway toll expenses: Advice to schools.

The attached guidance has been produced by HR and is aimed to assist schools in developing their own policy for reimbursement
The opening of the Mersey Gateway and the advent of tolls has generated a number of enquiries in respect of the claiming of expenses by employees.
As an employer, the Council has adopted a number of guiding principles to ensure that managers and employees are compliant with prevailing tax rules, and internal policies.
As an autonomous body, a school may operate its own policies, procedures and practices, however some of the principles outlined below may assist Head Teachers, School Business Managers, and Governing Bodies to ensure compliance and to deal with any queries or questions that may arise.
